I don’t see how consciousness is involved at all here, nor why pain should be treated as a special kind of disutility. Whether a rational agent is constructed of meat or GLUTs is irrelevant. To the extent that it can and does try to diminish our disutility, it is our moral and practical duty to try to diminish its disutility.
