My mom tells me that when I was 2 or 3 years old and in preschool, one day they had a group of kids come up and recite poems or sing songs or something. I got really scared and wouldn’t do my poem. Riding home afterwords, I said “I’m ready to say my poem now.”
“You can’t honey, everybody’s already gone,” my mom said.
She explained to me why it’s important to be ready when it’s time to do something.
“I don’t want to be scared. I want to be a person who does things when it’s time,” I said.
I have no recollection of this event, but even my earliest memories include some where I’m reflective. So as far as I can tell, I’ve always been reflective. Not much of a choice there.
On the other hand, I’ve never had any big sudden shifts in the way I look at myself. I have changed substantially in a couple of identifiable areas over time. One was becoming more sociable and friendly and more persuasive, which happened between the ages of 12-15. Another was becoming more materialistic, reductionist, and math-minded from the ages of 15-21. But if there were any more discrete changes, I’m not bringing them to mind at the moment.
