[An anecdote I’ve been telling various people on lots of occasions for the last year and a half, as an illustration that you often don’t need to convince people about AI being very risky and that it’s actually obvious to many people.]
December 2024. My parents insist on my being present during the yearly tradition where a priest from the local parish walks the houses, talks to people, gives them blessings, and receives some money in an envelope. I cave in.
The priest asks me what I do for a living.
Me: I work on AI safety.
Priest: Oh, interesting.
Me: …
Priest: Tell me: aren’t you afraid that this whole artificial intelligence takes over the world?
Me: Yes, I am worried.
Priest: Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it, and it’s terrifying.
Me: I agree, it is terrifying.
Priest: I’ve been looking for some books on this topic, but I failed to find anything.
Me: Well, I do have a book to recommend to you. It’s called Uncontrollable, and the author is Darren McKee.
Alas, this was a few months before IABIED was even announced. If something like this happened now, I would recommend IABIED.
