Animal welfare, hard mode

This week, we’re going to talk about animal welfare, specifically the controversial kind that doesn’t involve cute animals.

Readings

  1. EA handbook on the case against speciesism

  2. Brian Tomasik on wild animal suffering

  3. Bentham’s Bulldog on fish farming

  4. Introduction to the Shrimp Welfare Project

  5. (Video) Shrimp Welfare Project on The Daily Show

Discussion

  1. What kinds of animals are inside and outside your moral circle, currently? To what extent do you support animal welfare cause areas?

  2. Did the cases presented in the readings challenge or reinforce your views on animal welfare?

  3. Effective altruists often prioritize cause areas based on importance, neglectedness, and tractability. How do you think animal welfare, wild animal suffering, and shrimp welfare advocacy fares in terms of these criteria compared to other EA cause areas?

  4. What are your thoughts on the Daily Show segment on shrimp welfare? Do you think efforts like this can convince a general audience of the importance of shrimp welfare, or other less popular animal welfare causes?

  5. The idea of intervening in nature to reduce wild animal suffering is controversial, even among animal advocates. What are your intuitions about the desirability and feasibility of such interventions?

Location

Meet at Holland Village MRT Exit B (below ground part, NOTE THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM EARLIER) at 3 pm. We will wait for everyone to gather for 10-15 minutes, and then head over to my nearby apartment. If you’ve been here before, feel free to come directly to the apartment (though you may need to wait to be let in).

Some snacks will be provided. There are many restaurants and a hawker centre nearby, if you want to buy your own food.
