Winter War and Russo-Japanese War were from a quite different times (first half of the 20th century), where the level of globalization and ideological decay were quite inferior to today’s.
As for Crimea, it just can’t be compared to Ukraine. It’s an island, much smaller (not a whole country) and where the majority of the population are ethnic Russians. No wonder they pretty much didn’t resist, whereas Ukraine has become a bloody hell.
Yet, I still find imperialistic/nationalistic arguments quite plausible. They just don’t tickle my intuition to the point of painting the full picture.
