In the last couple of days I saw two humans and one AI present convincing-looking graphs/charts for their arguments, only to later realize after a closer reading that the graphs/charts are a result of extrapolations/simulations rather than direct data, and the thing the graph was supposed to demonstrate was a direct consequence of modeling choices in the relevant simulations.
Please don’t do this!
TBH I update substantively about a person when I see them do this. It indicates for example that they don’t have a such strong filters about what they tell other people, in a confident seeming manner. It also indicates that they don’t have a high degree of natural “drive to double and triple check information / an awareness of information pipelines”.
agreed, I wasn’t too impressed by the people who did that. Also, seeing it happen to me so blatantly was one of the few times in recent memory where Claude seemed straightforwardly misaligned to me (in the mundane Greenblatt sense). Usually when I don’t like Claude’s work it’s more due to either a capabilities issue on Claude’s end or just a difference in taste.
