I would expect non-attachment would be part of hedonium on the basis that attachments require brainpower that could otherwise be used to feel pleasure.

I don’t know what was intended in the story, but I think the best thing to do is to maximize well-being, and not take whatever extra effort it takes to make sure some of the hedonium still identifies as people.
