In 1901 you both suggested a Western Triple and offered Sweden to Russia in exchange for him turning south. Those would seem to be mutually contradictory policies (you have expand to somewhere), and since you followed through with Russia, I placed a reasonably high probability that you were planning to stab west. A Western Triple seemed unnecessary anyway, with Turkey and Russia at war. Since France was being cooperative about the channel, that made you the natural target (it took quite a long time to convince France of that, though).

Edit: Did you really tell England that you will throw the game to me if he stabs you? My main reason to stab him was desire to support this sort of play—precommitments, deliberate punishments and such.

And yes, I did. It was a long discussion, where he tried to get me to admit my behavior was irrational, and I replied that it made sense to play to spite, because it’s essentially like cooperating int he prisoners dilemma. If everyone plays to spite, you have less cause to make people angry.
