Your talk about starting with planned questions but later becoming more free form reminds me of a lot of different sorts of skill acquisition, but most especially dancing. I tried and failed to find an old dance meme that goes something like “How many moves do you know? 0 Years Dancing: What’s a ‘move’? 1 Year: 16 moves! 10 Years: What’s a ‘move’?”
