There are dramatic upsides as well as dramatic downsides. Government control reduces the number of racing parties which could aid slowdown agreements dramatically. It could also force coordination of alignment efforts across US labs.
I’m not a fan of the current administration controlling AGI projects, but for most democratic governments it seems probably net good to me.
