I’ve seen that term used elsewhere, I think it is mainstream. I don’t think mainstream researchers are claiming HIV is the only thing that can cause low CD4 counts and AIDS-like symptoms—AIDS is not a specific set of symptoms at all, so it’s bound to have many classification errors.
