My fear is as follows:
At some point there will be massive layoffs due to ostensibly competant AI labor coming onto the scene, perhaps because of the omnipresent propagandizing that these mass layoffs must happen. This will happen in the fields where people are most desperate to save money and create massive layoffs: public services. It will be an overreaction/mistake. It will never be corrected, because correcting it would cost more money than never having done it. Everything will just be worse, forever, for people with no ability to take their business elsewhere. This may or may not have been consciously a sneaky way of simply destroying that public service, but either way the AI hype will have made it possible.
