It reminds me of a tweet I saw recently, which read in part: “being very online makes you crazy but if you’re not very online then the crazy just sneaks up on you”.
That is, I think you’re plausibly right that most people you knew in the bay area were half-way to crazy. But also, it’s a hard unsolved problem how to adapt to a world that’s changing rapidly without being half-way to crazy.
Even noticing this problem seems like a valuable step, though.
