I also used to find ancestor simulators something unlikely for future AIs to do just because they would be so beyond us with their transcendental concerns etc. but then I realized we humans would be quite interested in simulating how abiogenesis originally happened (despite being unfathomably more complex and advanced compared to the earliest forms of life) so seeing simulations of us as analogous to something like that started to look not so crazy.
