In many ways I agree. But if you don’t see how it’s possible to do worse, consider:
In the US, even with infinite chips, we have constraints on the amount of available energy to use them. China does not have that limitation
The US is not actively coordinating to advance the development of AGI, just failing to put appropriate regulations in place. I imagine China would coordinate more effectively.
Two of the three big US labs were explicitly founded because they thought the others were being unsafe. Both have repeatedly failed to live up to their own original ideals, but as they say, some fall short of better ideals than others. I’d much rather have OpenAI and Anthropic racing than xAI and DeepSeek, if all the options on offer include racing.
