We’ve already got a society in which living things are treated like farm animals, by which of course I speak of farm animals themselves. They are of course privileged over a more defenseless living being that they live as parasites off of, which are plants. Some Swiss officials are working to remedy that situation, but it causes me to wonder why we should privilege the selfish replicating and entropy-producing patterns known as “life” over non-life? Fairness as symmetry is underdetermined and at least to me not particularly compelling.

I notice that Eliezer asks the question why it is we discuss fairness and find it compelling. He does not answer that question. My guess is that it signals a desire for the cooperation of others and establishes a Schelling point by which you are willing to cooperate with your allies against defectors. Upon violating the implied promise of future cooperation your reputation would take a significant hit. As I use a pseudonym only relevant in a restricted domain, I am free to ignore the damage to my reputation and the willingness of others to cooperate with me rather than punish.
