2) I think that its justifiable to abstractly come up with something, and then use other methods to motivate yourself to follow through. A trivial, much smaller scale example would be me deciding that I should do my math homework, and then challenging another friend to a competition to see who can finish their math homework the fastest.
Here I guess what you would do is come up with your abstract goal, and then psyche yourself up to work on it.
I am incredibly interested in this topic, and have a postor two that you might be interested in. Though (might totally be wrong here), I think that mine were written on a smaller scale than yours is.
I actually posted this completely inadvertently. I do hope to discuss these issues in the future here (and in person) but after trying to save a draft I realized my ideas weren’t sufficiently well-developed and that this wasn’t the right way to present things.
I am probably interested in the problem on a larger scale, or at least I am planning to engage in rationality outreach on a large scale. If you want to talk about the considerable difficulties, or whether this is a good idea, I would be happy to. I hope to start a wider discussion here in the future when I think it is more likely to succeed.

And an interesting on two.
