I am aware of the existence of people more rational than I am. As far as I can tell, they aren’t doing anything I don’t want them to do. Most of the people who do things I don’t want them to do seem to me to be less rational and less intelligent than I am. I’m talking about people instead of AI because I don’t think it matters whether something “out there”, is human or not. The important question is: Can it (whether or not human) be constrained somehow by whatever or whoever creates it, or by the rest of society so that we are “safe”? The evidence in the world tells me that we cannot. That evidence has a few components:
A large majority of people acquiesce the demand of taxing authorities.
Taxing authorities spend those resources on things many of the (coerced) contributors don’t want.
Taxing authorities sometimes declare war.
Granted, it is that “taxing authority” that would be charged with constraining itself, and that might work better than any other group’s attempt to constrain it. The problem with relying on that is that power corrupts.
