It’s not true that 86% of people have HSV 1 or 2, it depends on demographics etc.That was the number that a particular study found in dead people. Dead people are disproportionately old and sickly, and it also wasn’t a population reflective of less wrong readers. And just because you have HSV-1 doesn’t mean you should give up on avoiding HSV-2 or vice versa.
Amongst white Americans age 14-49, probably just under 36.9% have HSV-1 according to the CDC. (I say just under because the trend of prevalence has been going down over time, and this data is a little stale.)
I do think it’s worth looking into what to do if you have HSV (perhaps you should do nothing that wouldn’t surprise me), but I haven’t looked into it in detail yet.
