Huge comment threads on certain articles consume a lot of energy of users, writing page long comments and counter comments on more and more tangential issues. Clearly we’d be better off if smaller debates produced spin off threads of their own either in the open thread or on discussion level articles.
Idea:
Introduce a −2 karma penalty for posting in the comment section of an article with more than 1000 comments. A warning as currently implemented on the −5 karma penalty should be used.
Data please: how many articles with >1000 comments are there, and what are some recent examples?
I’ll also note that I just paid 5 karma to make this reply. Yet your comment was downvoted presumably because people disagreed with your suggestion, not because they thought you were trolling. The new feature of discouraging discussion on downvoted comments is counterproductive.

This thread is the example that made me think we would be better off if spin off debates had been made into discussion articles or at least open thread posts.
There is some very interesting off topic material but it is lost in the sheer volume. I now think there are probably far too few such threads to make this feature worth implementing.
Edit: I’m a bit confused as to why I’m being down voted for changing my mind?

That is also my perception.
