Not to disparage this or to “what about”: I am interested in the results of this research when applied to American social sites. I believe similar questioning should be levied at them.
Are they also distributing propaganda and if so, whose? Is it okay for their users to be influenced by that propaganda? Are there American interests symmetrical to CCP’s interests?
If 170 million Americans change their stance on American interests are the interests still American?
It’s not so infrequently I read of Facebook, X, Instagram manipulating users, if not for political ends then for the companies’ own interests. Is that permissible? Why?
Facebook and Apple recently reacted to EU restrictions in ways that aren’t dissimilar to TikTok’s message to their users.
Facebook’s message regarding the forced possibility of paying to opt out of data collection or the message regarding opting out of the marketplace “experience” were open manipulation in my opinion. They did not ask users to contact their EU representatives but they did withhold features to the users who chose to opt out. Paying a monthly 10€ to Facebook would still give one a downgraded experience.
This seems to me to influence users against their right to privacy and to shelter from big data collection.
Has the response to the Ukraine war not shown bias in “western” social media? Was that controlled for propaganda? Is it justified by “Russia started it”?
It seems to me that when one nation goes down the rabbit hole of censorship, it would behold it to inspect the entire field.
Answering the question “does censoring TikTok bring the American state closer to totalitarianism?” with “the CCP censors all American social media” seems to me to agree that it is a totalitarian act.
Should the government be allowed to restrict perceived dissent as soon as it reaches an audience of 1 million? Is that democratic?
Is it right to segregate China and Russia from America? How is that decided?
