There seems to be a bit of a terminology mess in the area of intelligent systems.
There are generally-intelligent systems, narrowly-intelligent systems, and an umbrella category of all goal-directed systems.
How about the following:
we call the narrowly-intelligent systems “experts”, and their degree of expertise their “expertness”;
we call the generally-intelligent systems “intelligences”, and their degree of cleverness their “intelligence”;
we call the umbrella category of goal-directed agents “competent systems” [it seems relatively unlikely that one would need to use a generic term for the “competence” of such systems].
Improvements / suggestions / criticism would be welcome.
