Not an expert on the topic, but in your position, I’d probably try to find another ordinary software day job that’s not too demanding, and try replicating a few AI safety papers in your spare time. Once you get 2-3 replications under your belt, if you find you like the work and get a good reception, you’d be in a much better position to pivot. In the meantime, you could always try for MATS.
