I don’t think the thing by Vox Day that you linked to is aimed at moderates; not, at least, by any definition of “moderate” that I recognize.
Tit-for-tat is not “the most rational strategy” in IPD—there is no such thing—though indeed it works pretty well in practice. However, “they did X to us, so we can do it to them” commonly turns into somewhat-more-than-one-tit-for-a-tat, which is unstable and leads to ever-escalating retribution.
