I wonder how much the “we’d stop if we decided alignment were really hard” belief is fueling low p(doom). I just don’t think humanity has the capacity to be collectively that sane.
Although I do think we can be somewhat sane within the strictures of power dynamics—e.g., limit development to projects controlled by the US and Chinese governments.
