This approach never made any sense to me: in order to buy myself off someone else who currently owns me, I obviously need to pay more money than I’m worth. Logically this means the price has to exceed my net worth, so I’d clearly have to go into debt to do this — but they were not proposing a cash deal financed by a loan.
