I think there is an important distinction. Humans actively try to ‘let cats be cats’ to whatever degree their resources permit. Outdoor cats and their consequences are a common topic of discussion, but even indoor cats see technology leveraged to let them enjoy simulacra of hunting and exploration that are as good as we can make them.
In 100 years, if we manage to make it out okay, I wouldn’t be surprised if cats get their very own little veldtsin our homes, endlessly built and rebuilt by self-assembling nanomachines.
