I see your point about forecasting persisting because it serves an underlying psychological need in people, to feel in control, or to validate their own outlook on the world, but where I diverge from your line of thought is in your assumption ( as I understand it ) that because we are not yet good at forecasting, we should stop with it.
That’s where I ask myself the question on whether it would be beneficial to be able to forecast phenomena, or not? If so, and I tend to believe it is the case that it would be beneficial for us to be able to forecast phenomena, because understanding current momentum helps you in steering it so that it meets your need, or the collective need of humanity, then its just about sticking with forecasting, and getting better at it.
Granted, when it comes to understanding some aspects of existence, we are still at the mercy of complexity of oh too many variables whose effects on one another and the world we don’t yet grasp at all, and its there where its entirely futile and wasteful to be forecasting at the moment, leading me to acknowledge that in those domains of life it would be best for us to stay close to the ground and stick with the direct task at hand, instead of projecting farther down the line, given the cost that has on us, but that is not the position of knowledge that we occupy when it comes to all areas of existence, which is to say that I believe forecasting has its place in the society after all.
