The CHOICE

I maintain a profound belief that within the formative years of life, a profound crossroads emerges, typically between the ages of 10 and 25, where each of us faces a decision that carries momentous consequences. This decision, colloquially termed ‘the CHOICE,’ is, in essence, the crucible that shapes the trajectory of our future.

This seminal ‘CHOICE,’ made at the cusp of adulthood, is akin to selecting a path through an intricately woven labyrinth, a path that has the power to define the very essence of our existence.

To elaborate further, I contend that every individual harbors the potential for transformation into their most cherished ideal self.

Consider, for instance, the ‘Wiseman’ archetype – an individual driven by an insatiable thirst for wisdom, dedicated to absorbing the profound works of luminaries like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. This person opts for a life of seclusion, ensconced in solitude amidst an enclave of books, and periodically embarks on sojourns to the distant Henan Province, where he resides among the ascetic Shaolin monks, diligently honing his craft in yoga and meditation. The audacious claim here is that this metamorphosis is within anyone’s grasp.

Likewise, envisage the charismatic ‘People Person,’ adept at establishing connections with an eclectic array of acquaintances. This paragon excels across various domains, consistently emanating an aura of charm, and seemingly boundlessly energized. Their image is one of sartorial elegance and ebullient vitality. Here, too, the transformation is attainable.

Let us now delve into the nitty-gritty of these transformations. For the aspirant ‘Wiseman,’ the path is comparatively straightforward. One must embark on an intellectual odyssey through the annals of philosophy and its cognate disciplines. Simultaneously, securing a source of sustenance, often as a philosophy instructor, becomes a tangible goal. As for shelter, a modest, isolated residence within close proximity to the urban arena of pedagogical pursuit is adequate. The earnings from this vocation can readily fund the trips, lessons, and acquisition of the scholarly tomes that form the bedrock of this journey.

In contrast, the journey toward becoming the charismatic ‘People Person,’ while more arduous, is an endeavor rife with possibilities. Excelling in intelligence, physical fitness, and social acumen necessitates diligent guidance. This may come in the form of literary wisdom, the companionship of like-minded individuals, or the expertise of professionals. A middle-class occupation that paves the way for career advancement can adequately finance this pursuit.

This exploration raises a fundamental inquiry: are we truly the architects of our destiny? The majority, I posit, are influenced by three primary variables when making their ‘CHOICE’:

  1. Desire

  2. Ambition

  3. Duty

However, the paramount realization is that life furnishes but a solitary voyage, and upon the crystalization of one’s intrinsic desires, we assume the mantle of sovereignty over our existence.

The pivotal issue, therefore, is not the desire itself, as where there exists a profound yearning, accomplishment is seldom far behind. Rather, the challenge lies in the crystallization of our aspirations, for when we select one path, countless others become obscured.

Among these three variables, desire shines forth as the most critical. Nietzsche’s immortal words resonate here: “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”

Regrettably, many find themselves at the crossroads of their ‘CHOICE,’ often swayed by ambition’s allure, familial expectations, or the influential choices of their immediate social milieu. It is not my intent to cast aspersions upon those whose path is forged through the nexus of these variables.

Thus, the enduring question is, how does one judiciously navigate this CHOICE? To this end, I have conceived two systematic methodologies to ascertain one’s aspirations and validate them.

The first, although straightforward, demands a comprehensive understanding of one’s present self as a precursor to ascertaining the ideal persona. Profound introspection, coupled with the discipline of journaling, seeking candid insights from cherished acquaintances, mindfulness practices, and other self-exploration techniques, serves as the cornerstone of self-awareness.

The second approach, although more intricate, holds promise for individuals of diverse age groups, dispelling the myth that CHOICE must occur during the defined window of 10 to 25 years. Do tell me if you have adjustments and improvements to make to this process to upgrade. It involves dedicating a span of two years to living as if a specific CHOICE had been made. This immersive experience allows one to truly inhabit different personas, from a diligent entrepreneur during the day to a vivacious reveler by night, with each transition illuminating the contours of one’s authentic self. The ultimate goal is to discover the ‘costume’ that fits most harmoniously, offering the choice of further experimentation or the anchoring of one’s path.

In summation, the counsel proffered is to approach the act of CHOICE with a discerning mind, recognizing that the heart of our existence is the choices we make.
