“Would you steal a thousand dollars from Bill Gates if you could be guaranteed that neither he nor anyone else would ever find out about it?”
Without making a case for or against my own altruism, I’d definitely answer yes to this question, for two reasons, which are really one reason:
1) From a utilitarian standpoint, a thousand dollars benefits me much more than losing a thousand dollars harms Bill Gates. Much, much, much more.
2) I am destitute and in grave need of money
Is this fair reasoning? I’d also say the monetary status of the individual must (obviously) be taken into account.
I just brought this up because it seems no one mentioned it, but to me it stuck out like it was in size thirty alternating pink-and-gold font, with a nice background highlight of green. I don’t think there’s some kind of Platonic wrongness in theft, one of those things that you Absolutely Must Never Do. I’d murder Hitler if it could prevent the apocalypse.
Seriously, it seems rather weird to me that nobody in the comments even brought it up. Am I missing something? Am I overthinking? I think I’m overthinking.
