Consequentialism 101

This week we’re doing a 101 level dive into consequentialism, favourite moral theory of rationalists and EAs.

Readings

  1. Read the introduction and the section on consequentialism in this moral theory primer by Mark Timmons.

  2. Read as many of the following articles, which look and different kinds of consequentialism in more detail, as you want:

    1. Act vs rule utilitarianism

    2. Hedonistic vs preference utilitarianism

    3. Perfectionism

  3. Read the four ethical scenarios for discussion here (excerpt from Ethics for the Information Age by Michael J. Quinn), including the questions.

Discussion

  1. Do you identify as a consequentialist? What type of consequentialist do you identify as?

  2. How do you feel about the issues raised in the posts above about the type of consequentialism you identify with?

  3. What do you think is right in the four ethical scenarios? Are your thoughts on this consistent with the moral theory you identify with?

Location

Meet at Holland Village MRT Exit B (above ground part) at 3 pm. We will wait for everyone to gather for 15 minutes, and then head over to my nearby apartment. If you’ve been here before, feel free to come directly to the apartment (though you may need to wait to be let in).

Some snacks will be provided. There are many restaurants and a hawker centre nearby, if you want to buy your own food.
