I really like this question but don’t feel confident about any of my current answer ideas.
I did want to note that a good test for a reasonable answer is whether it passes a “would this have ruled out human speech?” test. That is, any answer that labels “communicating by manipulating vibrational waves with tongues” impossible probably should be disqualified.
Totally unrelated to my prior point, Children of Time, a biotech/evolution heavy sci-fi book which I highly recommend, actually focuses on
a species that communicates complex knowledge and memories through generations and, subsequently, between individuals, via DNA viruses.
