“EAs care about people equally, regardless of location. Typically, the most cost-effective altruistic cause won’t happen to be in one’s home country.”
So which comes first, caring about everyone equally, or wanting to be effective as an altruist? Many ineffective altruists might feel like propping up African dictators just so that there will be a nice supply of desperately poor people to cheaply “save” over and over again is a bad thing. I guess the effective altruist knows better.
Can I be an ultra-effective altruist if I choose to value every life equally? I can save billions or trillions of bacterial and fungal lives just by not ever cleaning my house! Can you selfish bastards who only care about conscious beings compete with that? The other day my wife wanted to end a huge number of lives with some monistat just because her hoo ha was itchy. But I showed her the UEA way and now the world is an immensely better place! message me if you want to donate.
