See if the arguments he gives are the strongest ones, or the weak ones. To strongly oppose a belief on a complex issue, requires hearing the best arguments from both sides. Being unaware of the best opposing arguments, or being unwilling to speak them, is pretty good evidence that he let his biases get in the way of his reasoning.
It helps if, prior to using this technique, I’ve given them reason to trust me to be primarily interested in something other than scoring points off of them by “winning” arguments.
