Okay, after criticizing Luke’s last post, I just want to say this (particularly the scholarship section) is a totally awesome post that makes me want to get my butt in gear on a whole bunch of different things. I’ve just added “look into science of happiness” and “study what Luke wrote on how to beat procrastination” to my to-do list.
But a question: when you’re researching a question you know fuck-all about, how do you filter out all the crap? I almost feel silly asking this, because I’ve successfully done this with some subjects, but I’ve also sometimes had trouble doing this.
In particular, when I had my book (soon to become “my first book,” if all goes well) coming out, some of the main books I got on book promotion seemed geared to promoting the author’s book PR business. I did get in touch with the author, and got references from former clients of his, who persuaded me his services were a waste of money. Problem was, I had invested enough time going down that blind alley that I never got together a coherent plan for promoting my book. What should have I done differently in my “research book promotion” strategy?
