…I also find it useful, but hard, to exit ‘editorial mode’ when commenting. Editorial-like comments are quick and mostly shallower than epistolary-like ones. It helps to imagine that you are actually mailing a letter to someone you give a damn about (and Lewis Carroll, of course, has advice on how to answer letters—https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_or_Nine_Wise_Words_about_Letter-Writing )
