I’ve been following Nectome’s work in this space for the last ~year, and am overall quite impressed by the scientific rigour (especially the focus on external verification, e.g. by the Brain Preservation Foundation and SFF) and the team’s competence so far.
For young people (for context: I’m 21 years old and healthy), I think the $20k discount card option only makes sense if you have a parent or grandparent you’d want to give it to, since it’s transferable to anyone. Or in case you want peace of mind in the super rare worlds where you get terminally ill while young.
If you don’t have anyone specific in mind, the life insurance route seems better—a policy with a terminal illness rider is cheap when you’re young and covers you without tying up capital now. I think it makes the most sense to have it as an option when you need it.
Personally, I think it’s more likely than not I’ll never need to be preserved. If AGI goes well and the world manages to muddle through, I’ll hopefully be able to utilise some of the new life extension technology and/or advances in mind uploading. But given the small chance I do end up needing preservation, it makes sense to get the life insurance policy anyway just in case!
