Lighthaven Sequences Reading Group #92 (Tuesday 7/28)

Come get old-fashioned with us and read The Sequences at Lighthaven! We’ll mingle, do intros, then split off into discussion groups. Please do the reading beforehand—it should take about 25 minutes this week.

Lighthaven reading group

This meetup is for newcomers who want to explore The Sequences in a group setting, as well as longtime LessWrong readers looking for a refresher.

We provide dinner! We order pizza-of-the-day from Sliver (vegetarian and vegan). Please RSVP to this event so we know how many pizzas to get.

This week’s readings:

  1. Asch’s Conformity Experiment

  2. On Expressing Your Concerns

  3. Lonely Dissent

  4. Cultish Countercultishness

  5. (Optional) Asches to Asches

Prefer listening? Play this week’s readings or subscribe in your podcast app.

Doors open at 6pm (come in through the front gate on Telegraph Ave)

At 6:30, we’ll do intros and announcements, then split up into discussion groups.

Pizza will be served around 7:30pm, after which we’ll hang out by the fireside as late as we like.

If you’d like to help us keep dinner going, you can donate here (dinner costs about $200 each time, we recommend $5-$15 per person).

You can come without having done the readings (we do want you to join) but you will have to do a punishment. And you still have to catch up by reading the essays during the meetup.

If you’re having trouble finding the front entrance, you can call me (Diego) at (eight-one-eight) five-eight-eight eight-oh-three-four, and I’ll help you navigate.

Some questions to ask yourself about the essays as you read them

  • What is the essay’s central argument?

  • Where do you disagree, and why?

  • What remains unclear?

  • How would you apply these ideas to your life?
