We can’t trace the wiring in useful detail and see exactly how they produce some visible action, even things as simple as engaging in conversation or walking without falling over. (We don’t know nothing at all, but we don’t know enough by a long way.) The same applies to LLMs. We do know how LLMs are trained, but we do not know how the resulting LLM works. Their behaviours are encoded in their parameters and we have no decryption key.
