True cryptography occurs when you just get a message, and no other information.
I don’t think “true cryptography” is a good name for this situation. It gives people exactly the wrong intuitions for security. Also, in some usage “cryptography” is inventing ciphers, “cryptanalysis” is breaking them, and “cryptology” refers to the entire field.
I also think you greatly understate the fun to be had with the other kind of cryptanalysis, where you read a description of a cipher and look for a way to attack it!
