I think that, given your definitions, whether we are rational or necessarily “religious” depends on how the symbols in human minds are grounded. Certainly our minds have built-in assumptions that we don’t personally discover empirically. The question is whether it is possible to function without any such assumptions that are not necessarily true in the external world.
