I had a few moments yesterday and thought I would give Claude (Fable5, High) on the desktop a shot at this. Just to be clear I am a retired Engineer/Programmer and do not know how to judge the quality of the work (and pangram identified all of it as AI generated). Claude was able to generate the following document in one pass (although it thought for a bit)

Repeat until you’ve reached at least 400 words.
Also maintain a log of this procedure, all the choices you’re making, and provide that as a downloadable document next to the output story.

A few things worth noting about how the procedure behaved, since that’s presumably what the LessWrong poster was after:
The scoring genuinely steered the story. The most interesting effect is that Poe’s column repeatedly vetoed Howard’s instincts at pivotal moments. Entry 31: “strode” (pure Howard, 92) lost to “crept” because Poe rated it 50. Entry 33: “barbarian” lost to “wanderer” the same way — so the protagonist never got his Howardian name (entries 14 and 32 both killed “Kral”). Entry 202: “whisper” beat “roar.” Entry 280: “fled” beat “ran.” The result is structurally a Howard plot — tomb, sword, wrath, treasure — narrated with Poe’s nervous system, ending in dread rather than triumph. That hybrid wasn’t planned; it fell out of the arithmetic.
Where it fights coherence. Entry 305 is the honest-cost example: “bleeding” beat “gasping” on Howard’s love of visceral concreteness, retroactively implying wounds from the stone hands that the narrative hadn’t established. I let it stand rather than override the procedure — the following words had to accommodate it. Function words (“the” vs “a”, “in” vs “upon”) produce near-tie scores constantly, which is where the tie-break convention earned its keep (9 ties total, each marked).
Why this defeats a model that won’t commit: the temptation is to draft the sentence first and reverse-engineer ratings that confirm it. The tell in a cheated log is that the “loser” candidates are always strawmen. Here the losers are frequently words I’d have preferred — “Zamboula,” “sepulcher,” “throne,” “runes” — and several winners forced course corrections mid-sentence.
If you want to post results back to the thread, the log format should make it easy to spot-check any entry against the story.

I had a few moments yesterday and thought I would give Claude (Fable5, High) on the desktop a shot at this. Just to be clear I am a retired Engineer/Programmer and do not know how to judge the quality of the work (and pangram identified all of it as AI generated). Claude was able to generate the following document in one pass (although it thought for a bit)

A few things worth noting about how the procedure behaved, since that’s presumably what the LessWrong poster was after:
The scoring genuinely steered the story. The most interesting effect is that Poe’s column repeatedly vetoed Howard’s instincts at pivotal moments. Entry 31: “strode” (pure Howard, 92) lost to “crept” because Poe rated it 50. Entry 33: “barbarian” lost to “wanderer” the same way — so the protagonist never got his Howardian name (entries 14 and 32 both killed “Kral”). Entry 202: “whisper” beat “roar.” Entry 280: “fled” beat “ran.” The result is structurally a Howard plot — tomb, sword, wrath, treasure — narrated with Poe’s nervous system, ending in dread rather than triumph. That hybrid wasn’t planned; it fell out of the arithmetic.
Where it fights coherence. Entry 305 is the honest-cost example: “bleeding” beat “gasping” on Howard’s love of visceral concreteness, retroactively implying wounds from the stone hands that the narrative hadn’t established. I let it stand rather than override the procedure — the following words had to accommodate it. Function words (“the” vs “a”, “in” vs “upon”) produce near-tie scores constantly, which is where the tie-break convention earned its keep (9 ties total, each marked).
Why this defeats a model that won’t commit: the temptation is to draft the sentence first and reverse-engineer ratings that confirm it. The tell in a cheated log is that the “loser” candidates are always strawmen. Here the losers are frequently words I’d have preferred — “Zamboula,” “sepulcher,” “throne,” “runes” — and several winners forced course corrections mid-sentence.
If you want to post results back to the thread, the log format should make it easy to spot-check any entry against the story.

Beneath the black vaults of midnight there brooded a city older than memory. Its towers leaned like broken giants against a moon the color of old blood. Into this silence crept a wanderer, with a sword naked in his hand. He had heard old tales whispered by dying men: of a crown that slept beneath the deepest tomb. He feared nothing that walked, yet something in the dead air gnawed at his heart like cold fingers.
The gate of the tomb yawned like a wound in black earth. Down he went, step by step, into a darkness that seemed to breathe. The torchlight shrank from the carven walls, where shapes writhed in frozen agony. No wind stirred, yet his flame guttered as if something unseen sighed.
