In the newest episode of Person of Interest there is explicit mention of Friendly Artificial Intelligence, and the main character seems have an attittude towards AI similar to the one found on LessWrong. The exact quote is: “Even if I had succeeded in creating a benevolent machine, as if any such thing could exist, never forget that even a so-called ‘Friendly Artificial Super Intelligence’ would be every bit as dangerous as an unfriendly one.”
Since the LessWrongWiki is the second google hit (at least for me) under both “Friendly Artificial Intelligence” and “Friendly Artificial Super Intelligence” (the first being this wikipedia page, which explicitly mentions Eliezer in the second sentence) this might lead to an increased amount of visitors? Also it should be noted that in this series almost everything said about artificial intelligence is compatible with the ideas found on LessWrong (sometimes tweaked a little bit to make the series more interesting) - this series might well promote some beliefs on AI from LessWrong to the attention of a broader audience.
Yeah, I watch this series and this season in particular makes me feel like the writers read LessWrong.
Like any technical subject I’m familiar with, I get a little weirded out by the treatment it receives in the mass media as there’s always little (or big) bits that are just dumb for the stories sake, but Person of Interest seems to do a better job talking about AI than most shows do talking about whatever other technical subject.
