I didn’t mean to claim that everything is literally under locked glass (cars aren’t, though their interiors are), I was just using that as a vivid illustration of the general phenomenon. I live in CT and most things in a pharmacy are not under locked glass, but more is than used to be. 15y ago when I lived in MD, someone smashed the window of my car and stole the gps unit while it was parked in a public garage; the glass repair guy said I could file a police report but it wouldn’t do any good, and I should just make things like that less visible when parked. Last year my street was visited by the Kia boys, but they seem to have noticed & been deterred by the fact that my Hyundai was not from one of the EZ-Steal years. I’ve heard that in Germany people routinely deface their bikes so they won’t be as profitable to steal. I’ve never had a child kidnapped, but I did get arrested for letting my toddler nap in his stroller outside my window. Hard to pick any one image that really captures the whole range of voluntary and compulsory mitigations that do affect people’s well being but don’t show up in the statistics.
