We talked for a while about the brain preservation situation in Europe, and why things are more dysfunctional there than might be apparent from afar
I’d like to hear more about this! I’m currently a member of Tomorrow Bio, which you’ve briefly mentioned, and even though they use this (outdated?) deep freeze method they still seem quite professional and dedicated (e.g. publishing detailed case reports and showing improvements).
Is the difference about financial stability? Legality?
Mostly our conversation was about MAiD, and the way that donating your body as part of that can require crossing country borders. But honestly I don’t remember a ton of specifics because I wasn’t taking notes during that exchange. Maybe @Borys Wrobel has more to say. (Tho he doesn’t use LW that much, so if you really want to know, you might want to email Nectome. Hello@nectome.com)
Hi, the main discussion we had was about the physician-assisted death in Europe vs US. PAD allows for the preservation to be a planned procedure. At first the legal/cultural situation in Europe (specifically, the Netherlands, Belgium or Spain) looked better. But then when we actually investigated it in more detail—and I spent almost 3 years on this...End result: we decided to concentrate our efforts in the US, specifically in Washington and Oregon. This does not mean that it can’t be done in the EU now or in the future. It just makes more sense to start here.
