I had exactly this “groking” moment twice when reading 2 different late 18th c novelists: over 1k pages for the first and about 500 for the 2nd. Within maybe 10 pages it went from needing great concentration to being easily able to form mental pictures of the written scene.
Though this seems to be a smaller mental skill than the examples of the post.
