But evolution has many forms. It produces the magnificent unoptimal peacocks tail, because peahens think that it is neat.
You are a player in evolutionary games (both genetic and memetic). You can think that things are neat. You can think that “thinking a certain thing is neat”, is neat, as long as you demand costly evidence that other people think it.
What your society thinks is neat and it cooperates with, will be what persists, like the silly peacock tail.
