The whole point of it being Yeishu dying was because he was a perfectly not sinful God’s son, and since he had superpowers people would actually take notice.

Hah, funny.
Sorry, just had to add that.
If God is real, and he actually said the thing about killing people who want to divert you from your faith, then he has every right because he is the one true god etc., and if God doesn’t exist and he didn’t say that, then Christianity IS a bad thing.
Why would he say that pork was unclean, and not other meats too? Why not say that if you eat old food, you’ll get sick? These people aren’t stupid. In fact, all of these people lived in the desert. There would not be any of them left if they ate old meat on a regular bases. And why would you assume that they were ignorant and illiterate? Your idea doesn’t make sense. And making sense is the whole point of this website.
Are you saying that people defend the truth not because they think it’s true but because they’re mean, desperate people who want people to believe in them? So, if you defend the truth you’re an enemy, don’t listen to him, he’s mean?
And my eyes water when they’re too close to perfumes. You just dissed everyone in the world who’s sensitive to strong smells. Not nice, buddy.
Christians believe that God doesn’t change reality just by willing it. No one really knows how he supposedly created the universe. The theory is that Jesus doesn’t perform miracles by bending the laws of nature. I’ll explain: Potassium + water = big explosion. But if you added something to the water or to the potassium, you could keep it from exploding. So, on earth, nothing ever happens to water that will turn it into wine. But if God exerted a supernatual force on it, it would, without bending the laws of nature. The idea is that the laws of nature incorporate supernatual meddling, but these are laws that we may never discover because we can’t meddle with things supernatualy. God doesn’t change reality. And anyways, the Guardians thought that God was all-powerful, and that humans weren’t, so I’m not even sure they’re thoughts went down that road.
This website kinda beats up on Christianity a lot . . . I’m sure that there are plenty of other influental religions to bang on . . .
If stochastic means what I think it means (random) then yup! Water + divine intervention = wine. But it had to be weird to attract people’s attention. Or there’s something about the universe that would make sense of all this that we don’t know yet. O_o
But if God made people and our entire existence is up to his design, then a) He know’s something we don’t or b) The world is a cruel, cruel place.
And anyway, if he created humans, he planted our sense of morality too. I think the lesson here is: Don’t go chasing after other gods or you will get killed.
Hi, I’m Rixie, and I read this fan fic called Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, by lesswrong, so I decided to check out Lesswrong.com. It is totally different from what I thought it would be, but it’s interesting and I like it. And right now I’m reading the post below mine, and wow, my comment sounds all shallow now . . .
And, question: What does 0 children mean? It’s on the comments which were down-voted a lot and not shown.
MBlume knows this, he’s just telling us what he was thinking.
I don’t think that what I’m about to say actually applies, but you know what I find most annoying in the world?
Well, I’ll give an example: We were in gym class and the teacher was explaining discus and he told us that the boys’ discuses weighed 1 kilogram and the girls’ discuses weighed 750 grams. And then this one girl in my class goes, “Why is the girls’ discus lighter?” And she knows what the teacher is going to say so she goes, “Don’t say it, it’s sexist.”
IT’S NOT SEXIST!!!
In reality, boys ARE stronger than girls! And admitting to that is not being sexist, it’s being truthful! Being sexist would be saying that ALL girls are NOT ALLOWED to throw 1 kilogram discuses because they’ll damage they’re delicate bodies.
NEVER be afraid to say that something’s true JUST because it’s SOMETHING-IST! It’s NOT unless it’s DISCRIMINITORY!!!
Sorry for all the yelling, I’m very passionate about this, and thanks for listening to my rant . . .
I thought it would be more like hpmor.com, but for the authour.
Little did I know . . .
Hi everyone!
Well, I’m new-ish here, and this site is really big, so I was wondering where I should start, like, which articles or sequences I should read first?
Thanks!
I love this. I just . . . this is awesome. You rock. Thank you.
Hi! I was wondering where to start on this website. I started reading the sequence “How to actually change your mind”, but there’s a lot of lingo and stuff I still don’t understand. Is there a sequence here that’s like, Rationality for Beginners, or something? Thanks.
That’s not the right question. In order for facts to be useful, they must connect to something. Music is not a fact, except in the sense that “Music exists, therefore I expect to hear it under this circumstance.”
Math is an expression of what is constantly happening around us. Music is a thing, not a belief. “What good is Music?” Well, what good are trees? What good is love?
You put music into the wrong catagory. Music is a thing, not a belief.
The what good is love thing wasn’t meant to be philosophical, it was just an example.
It’s about how if you slide the probability of, say, bond yeilds going up, to be more likely, that makes the probablity of bonds yeilds going down or staying the same less likely. We can’t say, “I think that there is a 40% chance of bond yeilds going up, and a 70% chance of bond yeilds going down or staying the same.”
I suppose actually reading the book is out of the question. :) The Bible is not a book of rules and ideals to follow, it’s a history book. What Moses or anyone did isn’t right just because it’s in the Bible. Plenty of people take these ideas seriously. But what they take seriously (most of them) are the important things, like how to treat other people, not what to do if your second cousin kills your brother’s cow or something like that. Contrairy to popular belief, there is scientific, historical, and philisophical evidence to support the Bible. The problem is, a lot Christians are really deluded and unclear as to what they are, and which ones are actually important. Even when I’m in church listening to a sermon, I see things that I don’t like, things that make assumptions and are confusing and not welcoming if you don’t already believe it. And yes, that sucks, and yes, that’s a problem, but that does not mean the Bible is untrue, and it does not mean that religious people are unintelligent and unreasonable. They don’t think that genocide and rape are good things, either. Again, the Bible is a history book. Learn from its example and don’t make the same mistakes. And I havn’t investigated it myself, but many reasonable, intelligent people have read the Bible and tried to find contradictions. A lot of Atheists-turned-Christians did so because of the phrase “intellectual honesty”. They investigated the Bible for themselves and found that they couldn’t honestly tell themselves that it wasn’t true. It’s true that terrible things happen because of the Christian religion, but just because something is done in the name of a religion doesn’t mean that that religion supports it. Enemies of Christianity are not evil. They’re people too, and they’re good people. Christians try to evangilize people because they believe it’s for their own good. Burning you at the stake would probably kill you, and that defeats the purpose. If a Christian ever beats you up for dissing his faith, tell him he’s a hypocryte, becuase he is. The Catholic-Protestant thing is not supposed to be important. According to the Bible, the Catholic-Protestant argument thing is wrong. Rationality is all about TRUTH. If people lied and killed in the name of science, that wouldn’t make science evil and it wouldn’t make science wrong. I’m only in junior high, and I didn’t understand all of your comment, but the things I did understand I tried to . . . I don’t know, correct. And by the way, atheism is a religion too.
