Today I learned that “more granular” and “less granular” can each mean “coarser” or “finer”.

I’m confused too. Now I’m wondering if that figure seems so unrealistic because I don’t expect blatantly obvious stupidity to come from libertarians.
Now I’m confused. I expect any significant political party (or similarly wide grouping of people) to produce blatantly obvious stupidity.
But you’ve been around here a while, you know all this stuff. So what am I missing? Why would you expect libertarianism to be an exception? (If there is a LW-appropriate answer.)
I think you may have misunderstood this website.
I Was Wrong, and So Are You
I think I’d feel a little more encouraged if the title was “I Am Wrong, and So Are You”.
I thought IQ was distributed on a bell curve by the design of the metric?
If this works, it’s probably worth a top-level post.
Is there any reason why someone might not follow the cat?
Those don’t fit my understanding of the “ancestral environment”—I associate that with the tribes-of-cavemen era. By my understanding, Greek city-states are within our FOOM period. Am I mistaken?
To be fair, I’m sure a bunch of people here disapprove of some actions by the Christian God in the abstract (mostly Old Testament stuff, probably, and the Problem of Evil). But yeah, for the most part LWers are pretty nice, if a little idiosyncratic!
Azathoth (the “blind idiot god”) is the local metaphor for evolution—a pointless, monomaniacal force with vast powers but no conscious goal-seeking ability and thus a tendency to cause weird side-effects (such as human culture).
I approve of explaining heavily-downvoted posts (FSVO ‘heavily’). Thank you on behalf of LessWrong!
While I’m normally all for sounding mysterious—in this situation, won’t people just think you’re a recovering alcoholic who’s done something regrettable?
I disagree.
What he’s saying is: submarines traverse water, so it’s irrelevant whether we call what they do “swimming”. Likewise, if a machine can do the things that a thinking being can do, then it’s irrelevant whether it’s “actually” “thinking”.
He refers to this as a settled question in the origin of the quote. Moreover, he capitalizes the terms in question, indicating he perceives the concept as an incorrect reification.
“Oi, I just saw a smeert!”
“What’s a smeert?”
“So you believe in smeerts then?”
We disagree.
You seem to be suggesting that lies and manipulation in pickup serve to lead the target to a desirable outcome they would not deliberately choose, as in humor. I and many others have repeatedly asserted here that this is not the case. There are pickup techniques that are simply not acceptable—attacking self-esteem, manufacturing breakups, etc.
You (collectively) need to abandon this soldier.
Exactly. This whole thing looks like someone generalized from one example, didn’t think before they posted, made some errors, and got downvoted—and then some people jump to their defense because he’s in a group that the lesswrong-persona empathizes with.
The comment that started this implies the poster didn’t remember that homosexuals exist, thinks everyone is like himself, and doesn’t know or care about the wider effects of excluding women from his rationality group. There are a lot of incorrect defenses of this, as well as ‘technically correct’ defenses that are being selectively applied (“don’t criticize him because gender segregation is not in general a universally negative idea”, “anything that doesn’t have a universally agreed-upon objective definition is a bad criterion”).
If someone came here and posted that they wanted a whites-only group because white people feel uncomfortable and irrational around black people (the only ethnicity other than white), I’d expect a very different response from the community.
You could even have a dropdown menu or one-line-pithy-comment-section that appears when you click a “vote” button.
Now that I think of it, comparing explanations for up/downvotes to properly commented code could help increase support for such explanations...
Homer: Why’d they build this ghost town so far away?
Lisa: Because they discovered gold right over there!
Homer: It’s because they’re stupid, that’s why. That’s why everybody does everything.
The Simpsons, “Kidney Trouble”
I tend to agree. Customizable contracts would be the best solution.
For some reason I’m picturing the Creative Commons licenses.
I’m fond of downvoting “I dare you to downvote this!”
Turns out LW is a Chesterton-esque farce in which all posters are secretly Wills trolling Wills.
