Come on out to the ACX (Astral Codex Ten) Montreal Meetup! This week, we’re discussing Brandon Hendrickson’s book review of The Educated Mind by Kieran Egan.
Short summary: Brandon Hendrickson critiques schools for poorly balancing socialization, academics, and personal growth, using Egan’s “The Educated Mind” as a reference. Egan suggests a new approach, teaching kids in stages that match their mental development: hands-on for toddlers, storytelling for little kids, exploring passions in middle school, deep thinking in high school, and critical thinking throughout. This way, education could be more effective, but the review questions whether it’s actually doable or just a nice idea.
